Ornate was born in the early 1970s when a school teacher from a remote Afghan market town (Maimana) decided to make use of his lengthy summer holidays by doing something worthwhile. He started to experiment new and more delicate colours on rugs using innovative techniques such as a combination of herbs and the sun. This collection was so well received by the public that, what was first a personal idea, quickly became a full-time job and a family story. Today, more than 50 years later, Ornate’s family members are still exporting this heritage of handmade carpets all around the world.

Today every order is made to measure: from the very beginning of spinning, to weaving by a community of women from the surrounding villages and dyeing the wool to the final product.

From an idea to an individual workshop that quickly developed into a decent factory providing employment for the local population, Ornate has established itself through various design projects and world-renowned hotels.
